Ever tried to insert something into a scene in Photoshop? To do it really well is hard, especially if the scene contains complex lighting. Now a team of researchers led by Kevin Karsch at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have solved this problem beautifully. Their artificial scenes are so realistic that test subjects could not distinguish them from real photos. The scientific paper is here and the slick video is below or you can watch it at Vimeo along with some notes.
